Do I need to take the placement assessment?
Transfer students who do not receive transfer credits for the first- level of English and/or mathematics (Pre-Calculus or Calculus) are required to take the placement assessment. It is in your best interest to take your placement assessment(s) as soon as possible in order to register early and for the appropriate courses.
How do I register for the placement assessment?
Transfer students can register through the placement testing website . For more information please contact : placementtesting@dos5.net or call (973) 596-8389. (Please Note: You must access the registration form by using your NJIT email or you will be denied access.)
Do I need to come to campus to take the placement assessment?
No, you do not have to come to campus to take the placement assessment; it's administered remotely.
How long is the placement assessment?
The English placement assessment is approximately 1 hour. You are required to write an essay on selected topics - 50 minutes and complete a survey - approximately 20 minutes. The math placement assessment is approximately 2 hours and is divided into three sections: Basic Algebra (25 problems, 30 minutes), Advance Algebra (25 problems, 30 minutes) and Trigonometry (30 problems, 45 minutes). No calculators usage on the math placement assessment.
Is it necessary to prepare for the placement assessment?
Since the placement assessment is used to determine the level of the course in which you will need to register, we strongly recommend that you prepare. We provide practice questions and answers for the math placement assessment as well as a sample assessment and placement calculator. There are no study materials for the English placement assessment.
When will I receive my results?
Within 10 business days via e-mail.
If I receive extra time on exams at my current/previous school, how do I receive the same accommodations on the placement assessment?
You need to contact the Office of Accessibility Resources & Services (OARS) at oars@dos5.net or call (973) 596-2994 to make arrangements for accommodation during the placement assessment. Once approved, OARS will contact the Placement Testing Office with the appropriate accommodations prior to you accessing the assessment. What if I score poorly on my placement assessment can a retake it?
The placement assessment is used to determine the first level course in which you will be placed and should register. If you believe that your initial math placement assessment scores are not representative of your capabilities and level, you may request a one-time retake of the math placement assessment that can be scheduled at least 2 weeks after your first math placement assessment date. (No calculators permitted)
Retaking the English placement assessment is at the discretion of the Humanities and Social Science Department, you need to contact them at: (973) 596-3269 or humanities@dos5.net.
Can I be exempt from taking the placement assessment?
Transfer students who have taken the Advanced Placement Exam (AP) and/or International Baccalaureate (IB) course during high school and meet NJIT's criteria are eligible to be exempt from taking the placement assessment. Of course, receipt of transfer credit from a previous college/university for the appropriate first-level math and English course will make you eligible for exemption. If I am eligible to receive advanced placement course credits, where do I send my results?
You should request that your official electronic AP score report or IB certificate be immediately sent to: New Jersey Institute of Technology, Office of Admissions, University Heights, Newark New Jersey 07102. If you have taken a course in high school that was affiliated with a college/university, you need to have an official transcript sent from that college/university to the Registrar;s Office.
What does my course placement mean?
Course placements in math and English are determined by the results of your placement assessment(s) and/or advance course credit. Your course placement lets you know the course in which you should register.
